SPORTS VOCUBULARY

Hi Everyone..

Today, in this blog, I am writing to give some vocabulary about sports :

1- Contact sports

Definition : Sports like rugby, American football and wrestling in which the players have strong physical contact with each other.

He played contact sports when he was younger but then he had a serious accident on the field and hasn't played rugby since.

2- Spectator sports

Definition : Sports which people go to watch.

I don't understand why people think golf is a good spectator sport. It's so slow and not much happens in it.

3- Blood sports

Definition : Sports that involve animals being killed or hurt to excite the people watching or taking part.

I don't understand why people enjoy killing tigers. There are so few of them left in the world. I think blood sports should be outlawed .

Hopefully the vocaubularies will be beneficial to you.

A QUESTION

Hi everybody

Today, I'd like to write a little bit of questions. The purpose of this writing is to remember what I've only just read about questions. Sometimes I forgot what I read, so I decided to write it to remember it. And also I hope it will be beneficial to you.

I will try to take it is not going to take too long so that you will find it's interesting.

Let's take a sentence, for example " William ate a lof of chocolate". In this sentence, "William" is the subject and "a lot of chocolate" is the object.

1- When we want to make the subject question we do not need the auxilliary verb, for example : Who ate a lot of chocolate?. The answer is "William".

2- When we want to make the object question we need the auxilliary verb "did", for example : What did Willian eat?. The answer is " a lot of chocolate"

A book review (Corrected)

Hi I'm chiaki.

I'm going to talk about a book. Title is ROAD TO NOWHERE. I choose this book by its title.

It made me wonder. I thought why road to nowhere? I thought it would be an interesting story.

The story is set in Um Khalid. There is a side of the river. This was a British colony. Now the British had just left this country. So, there is a developing country. Suddenly, the government suggests building a new boarding school in Um Khalid. Therefore, a new road is nedded between school to Um Khalid. The Young people agreed with this plan. But the old people and conservative people do not agree. However, a new road is built. When they built the new road, they forgot about rainy season. So, rainy season came to Um Khalid. The Um Khalid was washed away by the rainy season.

In this story, conservative thinking is right answer. I think that this story teaches us when we make new something, we have to think well. And we have to listen to another's thinking.

A BOOK REVIEW (Corrected)

BACKGROUND INFORMATION

Title : The Sign Of Four.

Author : Arthur Conan Dougle.

Genre : Adventure

Reason for choosing this book : I like this book because of its short. I like investigative story.

ABOUT THE BOOK
Setting : The story is set in 1887 or 1888. 'The Sign Of Four' has a complex plot involving service in colonial India and a stolen treasure and secret pact among four ex-convicts.
Characters : Sherlock Holmes, Dr Wason
The plot : This book has an interesting plot that always encourages us to follow it. It is a mystery story book and an enjoyable read.
MY OPINION
I particularly enjoyed reading this book, because the book tries to explain some mysteries during the story. For example, "since her father disappeared, she received a large pearls via the post on the same day every year. Who is sending them?"
Although this mystery is not so mysterious but it was an interesting and well-written story. If someone is looking for a mystery and investigative book, this it is.
In my opinion, this book is really my cup of tea. Another thing I would like to say is may be everyone who read it they will be surprised at Sherlock Holmes's conclusion.
Reason for the above : I think the first page of this book is enough to explain that the book is mysterious and that it has an interesting story to follow it.
The English : This book is good for intermediate level. Sometimes, it can be difficult to take it in all at once, because there are many unknown words in some paragraph and it is difficult to get used to the structure of the sentences.
Overall comment : Overall, it is an interesting book to read , and quite mysterious. There are so many useful words to be learned.
Evolution : 7/10

A Kiss Before Dying (Corrected)

Author:Ira Levin
Original title :Kiss Before Dying
Placed & time :United States 1953

The Story
Bud Corliss is born into a working-class family and raised by his mother after his father walked out. As an adult, he uses an uncanny ability to adapt his personality to any given situation to chase his dreams of wealth and success — to be achieved by any means necessary.
An overachiever, he is a stellar student in high school and enlists in the Korean War at 18, returning as a decorated hero. The most pivotal moment in his life occurs during the war, when he corners, shoots and kills a North Korean soldier, who is so terrified of an American soldier with a gun that he wets his pants. Corliss is both elated by the total power he held over the soldier and disgusted by a display of terror he considers weak and unmanly. He makes up his mind then and there to never show any sign of vulnerability.
Upon returning to the U.S., he enrolls in college and meets Dorothy Kingship, the daughter of a wealthy copper tycoon. Seeing an opportunity to attain the riches he has always craved, he becomes Dorothy's lover, but panics when she announces she is pregnant. He is sure that her stern, conservative father will disown her. Resolving to get rid of Dorothy, he tricks her into writing a letter that, to an unknowing observer, would look like a suicide note and then murders her. He runs no risk of getting caught, having urged Dorothy to keep their relationship a secret from her family and friends. He continues to live with his mother, who dotes on him and has no clue as to what he has done.
Corliss lies low for a few months until the press coverage of Dorothy's death has subsided. Then he pursues Dorothy's sister, Ellen. The romance is going according to plan — until Ellen begins to probe into Dorothy's death, convinced her sister did not kill herself. Ellen eventually confronts Corliss, who calmly confesses to the crime before murdering her as well.
Not to be discouraged, Corliss courts the last remaining Kingship daughter, Marion. This affair is the most successful; Corliss sweeps her off her feet, meets and charms her father, and eventually asks her to marry him, a proposal she gleefully accepts.
Detective Gordon Gant refuses to give up, however, breaking into Corliss' childhood home and stealing a written plan for meeting and seducing Marion to get her family's money, as well as news clippings about Dorothy's and Ellen's deaths. Days before the wedding, he shows up at the Kingship family home and presents Marion and her father with the evidence of Corliss' deception.
On a trip to one of the Kingship family's copper manufacturing plants, Marion, her father and Grant all corner Corliss while he is standing over a vat of molten copper and threaten to expose him. Corliss frantically pleads his innocence, but they are unmoved. Realizing his luck has finally run out and that he is facing the electric chair, Corliss at last loses his composure and wets his pants — just as the North Korean soldier, his symbol of pathetic cowardice, had done. Delirious with panic and shame, Corliss loses his footing and falls to his death into the vat below.

Review
It is a famous story of a young man who lets the American dream run away with his soul. Bud Corliss is a completely cynical version of the same character, a man who will do anything it takes to get what he wants, including committing two ghastly killings.
My comment
I loved this book! Once you start reading this book and getting into it, it captures you to where you never want to put it down. This book makes you gasp, laugh, cry, and also make you bite your finger nails! If you love romantic and suspenceful books this is the one for you. I truly must say that this is the best book i have read for a long time

Memoirs of a Geisha (Martina's) (Corrected)

Hi!!!!!
I'm Martina! I want to write about the book that I've just finished reading, "Memoirs of a geisha".
The story is all about Sayuri, the geisha, from when she was a little girl called Chiyo who lived in a small fish town to when she stopped being a geisha and moved to New York.
So it is an autobiographal book (it is all narrated in first person), in which it is interesting to know about the traditional japanese figure of the geisha and about Sayuri's life, her studies to become a geisha, her enemies, her friends, her lovers, all with the social background of the second world war.
This book is edited by the "Penguin readers" and it is written by Arthur Golden. It is for the advanced level but the language is very simple and the words used very common. Maybe the only difficut is about the japanese words that aren't translated in English but they are always explained.
I really like this book and now I want to watch the film and see if the story is the same and how the director has imagined all the characters, espacially Sayuri, the main character.
Anyway if you want to read a simple but interesting story, and find out more about the geisha's world, this is the right book!

'Welcome to Riyadh' (Corrected)

The Capital of Saudi Arabia, with 4 million inhabitants (2003 estimate), is situated in the very interior of the country, 300 km from the Persian Gulf , and 900 km from the Red Sea.Originally Riyadh was located along a green river bed, which in addition to sources of underground water allowed a rich agriculture. With extreme expansion in the area, all natural water has long since been allocated for domestic use and in industries. The economy of Riyadh is connected to the national administration, financial activities and other services. Industries include food processing, an oil refinery and chemical and plastics factories. Riyadh is the transport hub for the entire kingdom, both with excellent highways, the rail to the Dammam and the King Khalid International Airport, which hosts the majority of international flights and connections to all other airports in the country.Riyadh is largely a very modern city, dominated by high-rise buildings along boulevards. Some quarters are dominated by less impressive modern buildings from the earlier stages of the modern era of the kingdom. Most of the traditional quarters have been torn down, but some of the historical buildings have survived, of which the 19th century Masmak Fortress is the most noteworthy. Riyadh has one of the fastest growth rates of any city in the world. The original population, of Najdi ancestry, has long been blended with groups from all over Arabia, as well as foreign nationals. The older quarters of Riyadh are known as al-Batha'a, which also provides what may be called a city centre. The main business and residential areas are the Olaya and the Sulaymaniya

Malaysian Foods : Where Did it Come From ?

Nasi Lemak Coconut-Flavored Rice Meal.

'Diversification' is the key word when we talk about the traditions of Malaysian food, because Malaysian foods are very culturally and ethnically diverse. In this discussion I would like to give a talk about it through multi-ethnic in Malaysia: Malay, Indian and China. We do start with the civilization of Malay food.

In terms of history, Malay are origin of Sumatra, Java, Thailand, Sulawesi and also Polinisia. With the influence of these countries, it is not hardly astonishing that Malaysian cuisine exhibites a lot of qualities from these countries.

Here, some example :

If we go to the south of Malaysia, state of Johor where I was born, there are so many the village of Java and Bugis people who comes from Indonesia.

Now we travel to the State of Melaca to know about the historical development of the Chinese nation. The influence of Chinese has started to spread in the 15th century. It begans with a visit by Warlord Mr.Yin Ching and Chinese Cheng Ho.

To be continued....

My hometown

Hellow, I'm chiaki. I am from kanagawa in japan. There is below to tokyo.

Kanagawa has 2 distinct aspects, a historical one,and a modern one.
The first shougunate, military government, was formed in kamakura about 800 years ago. So there is a first capital of japan. If you go there, you can see many historicalstructures. For example, temple daibutsu,a huge statue of budha, and shrine...
The modern aspect of kanagawa is represented by yokohama. There is the second biggest city in japan. There has many great sites, such as china town, land mark tower(the tallest building in japan)and etc... Yokohama know harbor town which has developed rapidly since 1859, the year when yokohama opened it's port and has adopted for foreign cultures more readily than other towns.

My Home Work Dammam City

Dammam (Also Ad Dammām) (Arabic: الدمام‎) is the capital of the Eastern Province in Saudi Arabia.
Dammam is the largest city in the Eastern Province; Dammam Port is one of the largest on the Persian Gulf. Its port for import-export traffic is second to Jeddah's port.
It is served by the new King Fahd International Airport, which is about 20 km to the west, served by a three-lane highway. Other cities that surround Dammam are Khobar, which is a thriving modern economic hub, and Dhahran, which is the headquarters for Saudi Aramco, the largest oil company in the world, and Qatif, the populated fishing and agricultural town.
Together (Dammam, Khobar & Dhahran) the cities have a population of around 2 million, of whom 750,000 live in the city of Dammam itself. The local sports stadium is Prince Mohamed bin Fahd Stadium.
The city is located in eastern Saudi Arabia, with 744,321 inhabitants (2004 estimate). It is the capital of the Eastern Province with 3.3 million inhabitants (2003 estimate). Dammam lies on tip of land stretching out into the Persian Gulf, forming a large metropolitan and industrial area, with about 1.2 million inhabitants, together with Khobar, Qatif and Dhahran. Dammam is a major seaport, involved in a wide variety of export and import. It is a center for petroleum and natural gas, but also the center of all commerce in the eastern parts of the kingdom. There is some agriculture, largely dealing with livestock and dairy products. Dhahran has excellent connections with other urban centers of Saudi Arabia by highways, and is also linked to Bahrain with a causeway. Dammam is also the terminus of the railroad to Riyadh. The King Fahd International Airport is shared by all the cities in the region. Dammam is a modern city, but has seen less investments and fewer projects than Khobar.

The cities of Dammam, Al Khobar and Dhahran
In the early 1980s Dammam, the capital of the Eastern Region, was a separate city but so close to Al Khobar and Dhahran that the traveler could pass from one to the other in a few minutes. Al Dammam was first inhabited by a clan (Al hassan) of Al Dawasir tribe in the early 1923 - 1342 H. part of the family led by Sheikh Ahmed ibn Adbullah ibn Hassan Al Dowsary migrated from Bahrain and was given the chance to choose a land where to settle by HRM the late King Abdulaziz. Al Dammam was immediately chosen for its vicinity to the island of Bahrain as the clan hoped to head back there soon, but the British rule in the region made it very hard for them to move in every sense (dividi et impera) so they finally realized they had to settle there for good. Years later, Sheikh Ahmed's brother moved south where he and his family settled in Al Khobar, which by that time was already inhabited. However this tiny episode gave to Khobar a population boost and close ties with the bigger city of Dammam. The origins of the name "Dammam" is controversial, some say that it is onomatopoeic and it was given to the area because of a drum positioned in a nearby keep, when sounded for the alarm it produced a melody called "damdamah", others say that the name was given according to the Arabic word "dawwama" (whirlpool) which indicated a nearby sea site that Dhows usually had to avoid. The weather of Dammam is particularly very hot in summers. It is also very humid in those days and the humidity ranges from 65-95%.However in winter the temperatures can drop to -4 degrees Celsius.
With the continuing expansion of all parts of the Kingdom, the three towns inevitably merged into one, creating a single municipality known as the Dammam Metropolitan Area. Each of the three towns which compose the Dammam Area retain their own character and some local administrative functions but, in terms of its place in the Kingdom, the Dammam Area forms a single administrative entity

Historically , the province has been isolated due to its rugged terrain, and during the korean war it was the site of many fierce battles for strategic mountain tops. After the war, the area’s rich natural resources, including coal and timber, were industrialised, bringing road and rail links.
Outdoor activities come here, Wonju and then enjoy their spectacular mountain and valley hiking, swimming at beatiful white-sand beaches, white-water rafting, all of which are accessible by bus.

My home town Seoul (Mu il Suh)

Origin of Name The name of Seoul comes from the ancient word 'Seorabeol' or 'Seobeol', meaning "capital" Seoul belongs to the Temperate Zone featuring four distinctive seasons of spring, summer, autumn and winter. In the middle of summer, the city often records daily highs of over 30 degrees Celsius. In winter, Seoul is geographically influenced by the expansion of the Siberian high pressure and prevailing west wind with temperatures dropping lower than other regions on the same latitude. The rise and fall of the high-pressure system causes a typical cycle of three successive cold days followed by four warmer days, relieving people from freezing temperatures.

My Home Town (Hitomi)

Hi, I'm Hitomi from Japan. I'll introduce my home town.

The city where I was born is Tokyo, the capital of Japan, but I grew up in Osaka. So I'd like to talk about my home town, Osaka.

Osaka is located on the main island of Honshu, roughly in the center of Japan. It is common to devide Japan into the east part and west part. Then, the biggest city in the east part is Tokyo, that in west part is Osaka, which means Osaka is the second in Japan, in spite of being the second smallest prefecture by size. So the city centre is always crawling with people.

Talking of culture, Osaka is famous for 'Owarai' which means a culture of gag and comedy. This is why most people in Osaka are very frank and friendly. Many young people aim to be a famous comedian and enter a training company for comedian. In addition, there are also intresting food culture, so we can enjoy eating many local foods in Osaka. The most popular local food is called 'Takoyaki'(the picture below), made by flour and octopus. I recommend eating this one time. If you don't intend to visit Osaka, I'll make this for you.

Osaka is bound up with Kyoto and Nara, famous for Japanese traditional culture like temple, because they are located next to Osaka. Therefore if you want to visit Osaka, you should visit there at one time. I am willing to guide my hometown if you want to come!

My home town

Hi,I'm Martina!
I come frome Rome in Italy.I really love my city because it's a place in which you can see past and present at the same time.If you walk among the streets of the city centre you could see a stone that apparently is only a rock but that really is a piece of column dated from the roman imperior! In fact I think that neither all the people who lives in Rome,as me,know all the historical places in the city.
The other face of this aspect is that Rome is always full of tourists and there is always a lot of traffic because of this:especially at time as 8am or 6pm you can't go out of your home if you don't want to take 1 hour for 3km;and it's impossible take a bicycle because of the many slopes...Rome is building on seven hills!
I can't explain in these few lines all the characteristics, the monouments, the history of Rome...the only way to have an idea of what it is and of who its people is,it's to come there and see with your own eyes!So go and visit Rome!

My home town

Hello, I'm James, and I'd like to introduce you to my home town.

The town where I was born is called Felixstowe, and is on the east coast of England in the county of Suffolk. It's set between two rivers, the river Orwell and the Deben, and like a lot of the coastal areas in this region is famous for its esturies, and the old pubs that you can find along the rivers and coastline. Felixstowe really has three parts. Firstly there's the seaside with its pier (like Brighton) and amusement arcades and spa gardens. Then there is what's known as 'Old Felixstowe', which is the well off traditional part that includes a golf course, and is very quiet and residential. Finally, there's the newer part of town where the container port is. In fact, this port is now the largest container port in Europe, and has brought a lot of jobs to the town. A few other facts about the town; it is famous for having had the first radar in the world (during the second world war), it's close to Ipswich which is the local football team that everyone supports (winning the UEFA cup twice), and until the 1980s Felixstowe had its own bomb disposal squad due to all the second world war bombs that continued to be found along its coast!

If you are still curious about Felixstowe and have any questions, please blog me and ask. I'd be happy to tell you more.
